The lowest rate fell from 16% in 2025–26 to 15% from 1 July 2026, and the 2% Medicare levy is charged on top. - [Medicare levy and Medicare levy surcharge: rates and thresholds](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/guides/medicare-levy-and-surcharge/): The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income, with reductions for low-income earners (for 2025–26, a single person not entitled to SAPTO pays no levy on taxable income of $28,011 or less). The Medicare levy surcharge is a separate charge of 1%, 1.25% or 1.5% for people without an appropriate level of private hospital cover whose income for surcharge purposes is above $105,000 (singles) or $210,000 (families) in 2026–27. - [Record keeping for individuals: what to keep and for how long](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/guides/record-keeping-individuals/): Individuals generally need to keep written evidence of their income and deductions for 5 years from the date they lodge their tax return, with longer periods for depreciating assets, capital gains tax assets and disputes. From 1 July 2026 (the 2026–27 income year), the ATO's $300 no-receipt limit, $150 laundry limit and award transport exception no longer apply, so work-related expenses claimed above the standard deduction need written evidence. - [Rental property tax basics: income, deductions and negative gearing](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/guides/rental-property-tax-basics/): If you own a residential rental property in Australia, you declare all the rent and related payments in your tax return and can generally deduct costs such as loan interest, rates, insurance and repairs, while capital works are claimed at 2.5% or 4% a year. Under a law passed in June 2026, negative gearing for residential property will be limited to new builds from 1 July 2027, with properties held at 7:30pm AEST on 12 May 2026 exempt, so the change does not affect 2025–26 or 2026–27 returns. - [Tax return checklist: documents to gather](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/guides/tax-return-checklist/): For an individual tax return, the ATO suggests having your bank details (BSB and account number), income statements from every employer, any Centrelink payment summaries, receipts for the deductions you claim, your spouse's income and your private health insurance details. Investors and landlords also need interest, dividend, distribution and rental records, and from 1 July 2026 the $300 and $150 no-receipt exceptions no longer apply to 2026–27 work expenses. - [Instant asset write-off: the $20,000 rule for small business](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/guides/instant-asset-write-off/): The instant asset write-off lets a business with aggregated turnover under $10 million that uses the simplified depreciation rules deduct the business portion of each eligible asset costing less than $20,000 in the year it is first used or installed ready for use. The ATO confirms the $20,000 limit was made permanent from 1 July 2026 and that this measure is now law, so it applies for 2026–27 and later years. - [Setting up an SMSF: steps and trustee duties](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/guides/smsf-setup-trustee-duties/): A self-managed super fund (SMSF) is a trust that can have up to 6 members, and every member must be a trustee or a director of the corporate trustee. Each trustee, or director of a corporate trustee, must sign the ATO Trustee declaration within 21 days of appointment, and the fund must be registered with the ATO (ABN and TFN) within 60 days of being legally established. Trustees remain personally responsible for compliance even when they use professionals. - [Super contribution caps for 2026–27](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/guides/super-contribution-caps/): For the 2026–27 financial year, the concessional (before-tax) contributions cap is $32,500 and the non-concessional (after-tax) cap is $130,000, both up from $30,000 and $120,000 in 2025–26. People with a total super balance under $500,000 may also use unused concessional cap amounts from up to 5 earlier years, and people under 75 may bring forward up to 3 years of non-concessional cap ($390,000) depending on their balance. Employer super guarantee of 12% counts towards the concessional cap. - [Division 7A: loans and payments from your private company](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/guides/division-7a/): Division 7A can treat a loan, payment or forgiven debt from a private company to a shareholder or their associate as an unfranked dividend, unless it is repaid or put under a complying loan agreement by the company's lodgment day. For complying loans, the ATO benchmark interest rate is 8.77% for the income year ending 30 June 2027 (2026–27), and a minimum yearly repayment is due in each year after the loan is made. ## Team - David Ross, Principal Accountant - Chau Tran, Accountant, Tax Agent & Consultant - Angela Ross, Bookkeeper & Tax Consultant - Geoff Versace, Solicitor ((02) 9938 3799) - Greg Kearns, Mortgage Broker (0416 138 907) ## Pages - [About us](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/about/) - [Service areas: Brookvale NSW and Redland Bay QLD](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/service-areas/) - [Client reviews](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/reviews/) - [FAQ](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/faq/) - [Contact / free consultation](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/contact/) - [Tax calendar](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/tax-calendar/) - [Glossary](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/glossary/) - [Full text of every guide, service and FAQ](https://www.rossaccounting.com.au/llms-full.txt)
